Aspen

Aspen is a prestigious mountain resort town in the state of Colorado that combines world-class skiing with luxury amenities and natural beauty. Located in the Rocky Mountains, it offers four distinct ski areas with terrain for all skill levels. Beyond winter sports, summer attracts visitors for hiking, mountain biking, and cultural events like the Aspen Music Festival.

The Silver Queen City

Why should you go to Aspen? Because it's amazing!!! I may be biased since I have family and friends who live in Aspen and have visited many times. I also worked as a lift operator over the holidays so I could spend extended periods of time there and improve my snowboarding skills. But there's a reason Aspen is a very popular destination. This place truly is paradise no matter the season. And while it has a reputation for luxury and celebrity visitors, it can still be enjoyed by all.

Nestled in the Roaring Fork River Valley of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 7,908 feet, this former silver mining town has evolved into a sophisticated resort destination that attracts visitors year-round.

In winter, Aspen offers access to four exceptional ski areas: Aspen Mountain (Ajax), Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. Each mountain has its own character, from the expert terrain of Ajax rising directly from downtown, to the family-friendly slopes of Buttermilk (and site of the Winter X Games).

The historic downtown preserves its Victorian-era charm while housing luxury boutiques, art galleries, and acclaimed restaurants. The pedestrian-friendly streets make it easy to explore the shopping district, which features both high-end designer stores and local boutiques.

Beyond winter sports, Aspen offers compelling reasons to visit in summer and fall. The town hosts the prestigious Aspen Music Festival and School, the Aspen Ideas Festival, and the Food & Wine Classic. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking the famous Maroon Bells, mountain biking, rock climbing, and fly fishing. The changing aspen leaves in late September create spectacular golden vistas that draw photographers and nature lovers.

Accommodation options span luxury hotels like The Little Nell and Hotel Jerome to boutique lodges and vacation rentals. While Aspen has a reputation for luxury and high prices, visitors can find more affordable options, especially during shoulder seasons (April-May and October-November).

Transportation to Aspen is possible through Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, though many visitors choose to fly into Denver International Airport and drive or take a shuttle the roughly four hours to Aspen (which ends up being a gorgeous drive past ski areas and through canyons). Once in town, the free bus system makes it easy to navigate between the four ski areas and around town.

Despite its upscale reputation, Aspen maintains a strong local community and environmental consciousness, with numerous opportunities to experience authentic mountain culture alongside its more glamorous offerings. Whether visiting for outdoor adventure, cultural events, or simply to enjoy the mountain atmosphere, Aspen offers a sophisticated Rocky Mountain experience throughout the year.

Things To Do

There are so many wonderful things to do in Aspen, whether you're hitting the slopes, shopping around town, or going for a hike at one of my favorites places of all time: Maroon Bells. Check out the list below for activity ideas.

These iconic twin peaks are among North America's most photographed mountains. Accessible by shuttle bus in summer and fall, visitors can enjoy the spectacular reflection of the peaks in Maroon Lake and explore surrounding hiking trails. In the winter, you can either hike or drive a snow mobile to view the Bells covered in snow. We had a blast with T Lazy 7 Ranch on our snow mobile tour. I would recommend booking a morning trip since the Bells can get clouded over in the afternoon.

Here For Après

Après is literally my favorite part of skiing. Is there a better way to celebrate another successful day on the slopes?! It's also the best for people watching, like seriously. Here are some of my favorite spots to sip a cocktail after the slopes close (or maybe even at 2pm because I'm done for the day early and waiting for the group to finish up).

Aspen's dining scene combines sophisticated fine dining with casual mountain fare, reflecting the town's blend of luxury and laid-back mountain culture. The restaurant landscape spans globally-inspired cuisine, from French alpine to contemporary Japanese, along with modern American establishments. Many restaurants emphasize local, seasonal ingredients and offer extensive wine lists. Reservations are essential at most establishments, particularly during peak winter and summer seasons. While not an exhaustive list, here are some great spots.

Where To Stay

Aspen offers diverse lodging options across multiple price points and styles, though generally trending towards the high end of the spectrum. Accommodations range from historic properties with Western charm to modern resort hotels with rooftop pools and bars. While luxury hotels dominate the market, more moderate options exist including lodge-style properties and boutique hotels. Many properties offer amenities like ski valets, spa services, and mountain views.
